Youth who have been in foster care or who have been adopted are often an especially vulnerable group of people. Behavior is an expression of a feeling or an attempt to meet a need. Crisis is a time of social, emotional, and physical distress that temporarily impairs a child’s ability to cope.

Our response to crisis should be to help develop the child or youth’s self-control, self-worth, independence, and responsibility for his or her behavior. This tip sheet includes guidelines for what to do before, during, and after a crisis.
